Celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week: The Heart of Veterinary Care

Every October, National Veterinary Technician Week gives all of us at Norwalk Animal Hospital an opportunity to recognize some of the most important members of our hero veterinary healthcare team: our veterinary technicians. At Norwalk Animal Hospital, our veterinary technicians play an essential role in the care we provide every day. They are skilled medical professionals, compassionate caregivers, patient advocates, problem-solvers, educators, and often a reassuring presence for both pets and the people who love them.

While pet owners may see a technician at the beginning or end of an appointment, much of what veterinary technicians do happens behind the scenes. Their responsibilities extend into nearly every area of veterinary medicine.

What Does a Veterinary Technician Do?

The simplest answer is: A LOT!

Veterinary technicians work closely with our veterinarians throughout a pet’s visit and are involved in everything from routine wellness care to diagnostics, surgery, dentistry, hospitalization, and emergency care. Depending on the needs of the patient, our veterinary technicians will:

  • Obtain a pet’s medical history and discuss concerns with their family
  • Assist veterinarians during examinations and procedures
  • Collect blood, urine, and other diagnostic samples
  • Perform and assist with laboratory testing
  • Take and assist with diagnostic imaging
  • Place IV catheters and administer fluids
  • Monitor hospitalized patients
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed by a veterinarian
  • Assist with dental procedures and dental radiographs
  • Prepare patients for surgery
  • Assist with anesthesia and closely monitor patients during procedures
  • Monitor pets throughout surgical recovery
  • Provide nursing care for sick or injured patients
  • Educate pet owners about medications, preventive care, nutrition, recovery, and at-home care

And that is only part of what they do!

Veterinary Technicians are Skilled Medical Professionals

Veterinary technicians combine their extensive medical knowledge with highly developed technical skills. They need to understand (just look at this list!):

anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, anesthesia, laboratory procedures, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, nursing care, and animal behavior.

Just as importantly, they must know how to apply that knowledge to patients who cannot tell us where it hurts or how they are feeling. A technician monitoring anesthesia, for example, must continuously watch a patient’s heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, oxygen levels, temperature, and other vital signs while recognizing subtle changes that could indicate a problem. When caring for a hospitalized pet, technicians may notice small changes in behavior, appetite, comfort, or vital signs that provide important information about how that patient is responding to treatment.

This professional attention to detail is an important part of the excellent veterinary medicine practiced at Norwalk Animal Hospital

Veterinary Technicians Are Also Patient Advocates

One of the most meaningful roles of a veterinary technician is being an advocate for the animal in their care. Veterinary patients don’t understand why they are having blood drawn, receiving medication, undergoing a procedure, or waking up in an unfamiliar environment after surgery. A good technician understands not only the medical needs of the patient, but also the importance of reducing fear and providing reassurance.

Sometimes that means a gentle touch or a calm voice. Sometimes it means finding a more comfortable way to position a patient, recognizing signs of stress, or simply spending an extra moment helping a frightened pet feel safe.Technical ability is essential, but so are patience, empathy, and compassion.

Veterinary Technicians Support Pet Owners, Too

Veterinary technicians don’t just care for animals. They also spend a tremendous amount of time helping the people who love them. They answer pet parents’ questions, explain medications, review discharge instructions, demonstrate how to provide care at home, discuss preventive health recommendations, and help families understand what to expect after a procedure or during a pet’s recovery. For pet owners who are worried about a sick or injured companion, having a knowledgeable and compassionate person available to explain what is happening can make an enormous difference.

An Essential Part of the Veterinary Team

Excellent veterinary care is a team effort. Their work allows the entire medical team to operate effectively and, most importantly, helps ensure that every patient receives attentive, individualized care.

Veterinarians rely on technicians to help gather information, perform diagnostics, monitor patients, administer treatments, assist with procedures, and provide the continuous nursing care that pets may need throughout the day.

At Norwalk Animal Hospital, we are fortunate to have veterinary technicians who bring their knowledge, skill, patience, and compassion to work every day.

THANK YOU to Our Veterinary Technicians

National Veterinary Technician Week may last only one week, but our appreciation for our technicians lasts all year. There are countless moments pet owners may never see: the technician comforting a nervous dog before a procedure, carefully monitoring an anesthetized patient, encouraging a hospitalized cat to eat, double-checking a medication dosage, cleaning and preparing equipment for the next patient, or staying close to a pet as they wake up from surgery.

Those moments matter.

To our veterinary technicians at Norwalk Animal Hospital: THANK YOU for everything you do for our patients, our clients, our veterinarians, and one another.

Your knowledge makes a difference. Your skills make a difference. Your compassion makes a difference.

And veterinary medicine simply wouldn’t be the same without you.

Happy National Veterinary Technician Week from all of us at Norwalk Animal Hospital!
